Train or Flight in China? Time, Baggage and Costs

How to compare

Choose between rail and air using bookable services on the same date, total door-to-door time, luggage, document procedures, transfer risk and complete costs. Distance alone is not enough. This guide does not give undated fares, punctuality percentages or a distance threshold that always favours flying.

Build a same-date comparison with exact stations/airports, departure and arrival times, transfers at both ends, baggage, cancellation terms and total cost. Place sightseeing around confirmed connections and keep transfer days flexible. This is planning advice, not a confirmed timetable or a promise to complete the transfer that day.

City pairs and western routes

For city pairs such as Beijing–Shanghai and Xi’an–Chengdu, start by comparing direct trains with nonstop flights; these are search suggestions, not a promise of service on your dates. Multi-stop trips in Yunnan or Xinjiang also need ground transfers, weather and rest time. Do not use the old distance or duration estimates for long journeys such as Beijing–Urumqi.

Rail and airline baggage

Rail carry-on allowances are limited: 20 kg free per ordinary passenger and 10 kg per child. Each item must weigh no more than 20 kg; on EMU trains its combined length, width and height must not exceed 130 cm. Conventional trains and qualifying mobility aids have different provisions. Measure luggage rather than relying on a suitcase size label or assuming that no weighing means no limit.

Cabin and checked baggage allowances, seat selection and change/refund charges vary by airline and fare product. Economy does not universally include 20 kg of checked luggage. Check the fare conditions and operating carrier before booking.

Check a power bank’s rated energy in Wh; 20,000 mAh does not automatically equal 100 Wh. CAAC prohibits checking power banks. Up to 100 Wh generally needs no airline approval; above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh needs approval and is limited to two per person; above 160 Wh is prohibited. Domestic flights additionally prohibit units without a clear CCC mark and recalled models/batches. Recheck the operating airline’s latest limits and do not use power banks to charge devices during flight.

Connections and changes

Include the journey to the station, security, identity checks, walking to the platform and transfer time. Ticket-check closure follows the station notice; there is no universal 15-minute deadline. Airport-to-station and cross-city station transfers need their own time allowance.

For ordinary domestic rail tickets, one change is permitted subject to availability and the applicable conditions. After departure, act before 24:00 that day: changing to another train that day can be free of a change fee; changing to a later date within the booking window incurs the applicable change fee. Fare differences are separate. A ticket changed after departure is not refundable. Cross-border, international and special products need their own rules checked on 12306.
