China High-Speed Rail: Documents, Baggage and Ticket Rules

Booking and documents

Enter your name and number for the document used to book and complete the identity checks required by 12306. Select the appropriate category for a foreign passport or a Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan travel permit. Carry the original valid booking document; use a staffed channel if a gate cannot read it. Passport scanning is not guaranteed at every gate.

Check the exact departure and arrival stations, date, availability and seat class on 12306 before paying. Use the current booking window and release time shown there. A waitlist or third-party advance request is not an issued ticket. Check any agency fee separately from the rail fare; processing time and availability are not guaranteed.

At the station and carry-on luggage

Include the journey to the station, security, identity checks, walking to the platform and transfer time. Ticket-check closure follows the station notice; there is no universal 15-minute deadline. Airport-to-station and cross-city station transfers need their own time allowance.

Rail carry-on allowances are limited: 20 kg free per ordinary passenger and 10 kg per child. Each item must weigh no more than 20 kg; on EMU trains its combined length, width and height must not exceed 130 cm. Conventional trains and qualifying mobility aids have different provisions. Measure luggage rather than relying on a suitcase size label or assuming that no weighing means no limit.

Travelling with children

Age is assessed on the travel date. Children aged 6 to under 14 need a child concession ticket. Each ticketed adult may take one child under 6 free without a separate seat, with the child’s document declared in advance. Additional children or those needing their own seat require child tickets; from age 14, the full fare applies. Check cross-border rules separately.

Missed trains, changes and mistaken purchases

For ordinary domestic rail tickets, one change is permitted subject to availability and the applicable conditions. After departure, act before 24:00 that day: changing to another train that day can be free of a change fee; changing to a later date within the booking window incurs the applicable change fee. Fare differences are separate. A ticket changed after departure is not refundable. Cross-border, international and special products need their own rules checked on 12306.

The 2026 mistaken-purchase concession is conditional: eligible new tickets bought by registered users through the specified 12306 channels for travel from 2026-02-02 can be refunded free within 30 minutes of successful purchase, provided departure is more than 4 hours away, for one order per day. Changed tickets, waitlists, reservations and other listed products are excluded. This is not unconditional cancellation for every order or channel; check ordinary refund charges separately.
