China Travel Tips: Payments, Transport and Local Customs

Before Departure: Four Things That Set the Trip's Floor

1. Confirm your visa or visa-free eligibility: check whether your nationality qualifies for 30-day visa-free entry, 240-hour transit, or requires an L visa — this is the foundation of everything else (see our 240-hour transit guide)
2. Prepare the appropriate valid identity document, a phone number able to receive verification messages and the bank card you intend to use. Register, verify and try linking through the official Alipay or WeChat service. Wallets, card networks, issuers, documents and accounts have different eligibility rules. Successful linking does not guarantee every purchase or merchant will work.
3. Download essential apps and offline map/translation data before departure, save accommodation addresses, tickets and contacts, and test verification-message reception. After arrival, check data, maps, payments and ride-hailing. Plan a fallback for mountain areas, long transfers and congestion. Confirm coverage, speed and service access with the provider; connection within a minute or uninterrupted coverage is not promised.
4. Save key info as Chinese screenshots: hotel name and address, itinerary, destination names. Showing a driver a screenshot works ten times better than pronouncing English street names

Arrival Day: Adjust First, Sightsee Later

• Check arrival procedures and documents for your document type, entry scheme and port. Fingerprint collection has eligibility rules and exceptions; neither a universal procedure nor completion in 20–40 minutes is guaranteed.
• Keep more than one payment option: RMB cash, a physical card and a verified wallet. Cash remains a payment option. Physical cards require a merchant that accepts the relevant network. For a Hong Kong, Macao or other overseas wallet, check the specific account and merchant’s mainland acceptance. Ask the platform and issuer about refund timing, fee refunds and final exchange rates; no fixed refund period is promised.
• Prepare drinking water for your health needs and local conditions; check shop prices and accommodation provision rather than relying on a uniform retail price.
• Navigate with Amap or Baidu Maps: international mapping apps have incomplete data on the mainland. Amap has an English mode; pair it with camera translation for signs and menus

Getting Around: The Hard Rules

• Security and prohibited/restricted-item rules differ by transport mode. Check rail, aviation or local operator rules rather than assuming all liquids are allowed.
• Use the official DiDi China app or a verified official mini-program entry point; do not assume a DiDi service for another market is the same product. The developer lists an English interface, overseas-number login, international-card options and Chinese/English message translation. These are advertised capabilities: check your account, card, city and app version, including whether your number receives verification messages.
• Enter your name and number for the document used to book and complete the identity checks required by 12306. Select the appropriate category for a foreign passport or a Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan travel permit. Carry the original valid booking document; use a staffed channel if a gate cannot read it. Passport scanning is not guaranteed at every gate.
• Check each attraction’s booking rules. The Palace Museum’s standard guidance opens reservations at 20:00 seven days before a visit, offers no same-day tickets and requires real-name booking. Special opening notices can differ; use the official channel for your date and ticket type. Availability is not guaranteed.

Food: Treat It as Part of the Itinerary

• Chinese food is plural: the chili heat of Sichuan and Hunan, Cantonese freshness, northwestern noodles, Jiangnan's sweet delicacy — the spread resembles the distance between European cuisines. Do not calibrate expectations from your local takeaway
• Negotiate spice levels when ordering: say bu yao la for no chili; even mild (wei la) packs real heat for unaccustomed palates
• QR-code ordering is the norm: many restaurants run entirely from a table QR code — menu, order, payment in one scan. Use camera translation for Chinese-only interfaces
• Plan food and water around your health needs; neither bottled nor hot water is a universal safety guarantee. Seek qualified advice in advance for specific needs.

Culture and Habits: Small Details, Big Goodwill

• No tipping culture: restaurants, hotels and taxis do not expect tips; offering one usually creates confusion
• Being noticed is normal: outside the big cities, foreign faces attract friendly curiosity and occasional photo requests — nearly always well-meant
• Bargaining has a place: markets and souvenir stalls are fair game (start around 30% of asking); fixed-price malls and convenience stores are not
• Queuing is improving but imperfect: hold your ground gently at security and boarding lines during rush periods
