Qinghai to Dunhuang: A Silk Road Journey

Travel for twelve days and eleven nights from Xining through Qinghai Lake, Chaka, Qilian, Zhangye and Jiayuguan to Dunhuang. This one-way route combines plateau scenery with Silk Road culture, finishing with Mogao and Dunhuang excursions. Plan departure transport from Dunhuang. This is a reference route; accommodation, tickets, transport and fee coverage are subject to the confirmed quotation and itinerary.

Your itinerary, day by day

1. Day 1Arrival in Xining

   Airport pickup and hotel check-in. Sample Qinghai specialties such as yak meat and niangpi, and soak in the atmosphere of this highland city.

2. Day 2Ta'er Monastery & Huangyuan Ancient Town

   Visit the sacred Ta'er Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism, admire butter sculpture and appliqué thangka art, and explore the century-old Huangyuan town.

3. Day 3Qinghai Lake

   Visit open lakeside areas at Qinghai Lake and allow time to observe the water and surrounding landscape. Confirm seasonal flower fields and any cycling option against open routes and personal preferences.

4. Day 4Chaka Salt Lake

   Visit Chaka Salt Lake and photograph it from permitted walkways and viewing areas. Reflections depend on weather. Choose clothing, footwear and paid transport according to actual needs, without assuming entry into the water.

5. Day 5Qilian Mountain Grassland

   Travel towards Qilian, with viewpoints around Zhuoer Mountain and Niuxin Mountain subject to the confirmed route. Check stops, accommodation and driving time together; a grassland cabin room type is not promised.

6. Day 6Zhangye Rainbow Mountains

   Visit the Zhangye Seven-Color Danxia National Geopark. Mountains painted in seven vivid colors shimmer under sunlight like a natural palette — truly awe-inspiring.

7. Day 7Giant Buddha Temple & Mati Temple

   Visit Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple and the Mati Temple cave complex to explore temple architecture and cave art. Accessible areas and caves depend on the arrangements on the day.

8. Day 8Jiayuguan Great Wall

   Visit Jiayuguan Fortress to learn about Great Wall passes and Silk Road transport. The confirmed route will specify access to the walls and any additional nearby sights.

9. Day 9Arrival in Dunhuang

   Continue to Dunhuang and visit the Mingsha Mountain area if arrival time permits. Camel riding is optional and costs extra. Sunset viewing depends on weather and entry time.

10. Day 10Mogao Caves

    Visit Mogao with the ticket type and time actually secured. Start at the Mogao Digital Exhibition Center before proceeding to the cave area as directed. Standard, emergency and special-cave visits have different content; no film, cave count or particular cave is promised before booking. Check the official channel for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign travel documents.

11. Day 11Jade Gate Pass & Yadan Landforms

    Use Yumen Pass and the Yadan landscape as the main western-route options. The original plan also lists Crescent Lake; its connection with these sites needs a fresh driving-time assessment before assigning it to a day, to avoid an overly rushed schedule.

12. Day 12Departure

    Arrange departure transfers for a flight or train from Dunhuang. Departing from another city requires separate confirmation of onward transport and any extra accommodation.
